This effort supports the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Laboratory’s CODIS Unit. CODIS is a client server application developed using Microsoft .NET that supports a MS SQL database repository of DNA profiles from individuals, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons. CODIS software allows local, state, and national laboratories to compare DNA profiles, linking serial crimes to each other and identifying suspects by matching DNA profiles from crime scenes to individuals’ profiles. Additionally, the CODIS software is used to assist with the identification of unidentified human remains, missing persons and disaster victims.


The CODIS Development and Test environments are complex, supporting many different environment configurations. There are common data needs across the program, in addition to unique requirements in each environment. The CODIS Senior Database Engineer serves as a hands-on database servant leader in an agile development environment, ensuring all databases are deployed and configured properly with data appropriate for the respective deployment environment. You will have a chance to apply your database and data expertise in supporting a remarkable program that protects the American public.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Review all changes made by CODIS developers to database related objects: Stored Procedures, Schema Changes, Views, Triggers, etc.
  • Produce diagrams and reports of database changes from TFS code shelf set submissions
  • Develop and maintain database naming conventions and standards
  • Identify and perform data model improvements:  triggers and database objects, improvement referential integrity, performance, etc.
  • Analyze future releases of SQL Server and new tools and technologies for implementation into the software and/or database
  • Manage database related documentation:
    • Develop Default Data Document (DDD) and Database Design Specification (DDS)
    • Maintain the CODIS Data Model and related Entity Relationship Diagrams
  • Coordinate and manage all data used for CODIS Development and Testing
    • Configure baseline databases for all environments, including valid default data
    • Work with CODIS Subject Matter Experts to define valid test data
    • Manage the data and any changes made to the baseline Automated Testing database(s)
    • Keep all environments synchronized with appropriate data
  • Assist with standard DBA tasks related to deploying and configuring databases
 
REQUIRED
  • Minimum of 5 years working in a software development environment
  • Minimum of 10 years of hands on direct experience in Microsoft SQL Server database development and administration; at least 2 years’ experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 or newer
  • Hands on development with Microsoft T-SQL (Stored Procedures, Schema Changes, Views, Triggers, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Application development using C#/.NET framework
  • Experience writing technical and non-technical software related documentation
  • Exceptional collaborative communication skills
  • U.S. Citizen and ability to pass a public trust investigation
 
DESIRED
  • Understanding and experience of Test Automation Frameworks, Regression, System, and Performance Testing
  • SSIS, SSRS and Analysis Services
  • Redgate SQL Toolbelt
  • ER/Studio Data Architect
  • Expert knowledge of theories and principles in the field of data analysis, especially as they apply to generation and maintenance of test data sets
  • Microsoft SQL Server certification (MCSA, MCSE preferred)
  • Security+ Certification
